3 March: Peter for dinner in room at 7pm. Friendlier than he's been for months: is there still hope? He's on train at 11.15. Ron in when I get back to house. He's waiting for me in bed as I write this.
25 March: Peter for dinner, he stays and poses too. When Ron comes in, I expect Peter to get dressed and go, but he just wraps my dressing gown around him and says, 'I think I'll stay if that's all right with you two love birds'. He's grinning his head off.
29 March: Very polite notice from landlord to leave flat within two weeks.
10 April: Find a nice room on Rosslyn Hill. Ron to move in with me.
What was Peter up to? He certainly saw John as a reliable source of money—he tapped him for cash and accepted all the presents offered. But there was more to it than that. With John's encouragement, he had decided to try his hand at professional modelling, and needed contacts and advice. And so they continued as friends for the rest of 1954, while John busily used his camera to make money. 1955 saw the final act of this strange relationship.
Anne had disappeared off the scene in the autumn, when a pregnancy scare sent Peter running for the hills, refusing to communicate with her even when she found it was a false alarm. John, however, was a better friend, and sent Anne a Christmas card. She replied with a short, friendly note in early January; John invited her to London.
29 January: Anne comes to town—her first visit in 12 months! Pleasant afternoon talking about ourselves, and Peter, inevitably. I enjoy her company, am surprised by how much.
30 January: Am flabbergasted! By 2am last night Anne and I were in bed together. I feel amazed and very young, very silly and very happy. Anne and I understand each other so well, and our sentimental, physical and emotional rapport is complete. Hope it will last—this thing I've prayed for so long, this normal and healthy and jolly relationship with a girl. Walk together on the Heath hand in hand this afternoon. She leaves at 5pm and leaves my life very empty. But a complete solution of the Peter problem after two and a half years. I'm tentatively accepted as her future husband.
1 February: Peter takes the news in a rather jealous manner, and is more than a trifle coarse in his humour.
13 February: So much love last night and this morning. The decisions to be made exhaust me. A Jekyll and Hyde battle. Anne says repeatedly that she loves me.
19 February: A very old-fashioned day. Meet Dennis in Charing Cross Road. In evening, meet perfect model Tony, 24, boxer, ex-paratrooper, 12 stone, intelligent, co-operative, not sophisticated. 10pm meet Greg, blond, 18, very attractive and simpatico. And at 1 am outside Belsize Park tube meet Ken, 6'2", 14 stone, so we spend till 2.30am in my room!!!
25 February: Took Peter and Anne to Casa Pepe, Dean Street, for dinner.
